In a previous article, you learnt the basic French vocabulary (hello, thank you etc). It’s great to be polite and all, but now you may want to tell more about yourself and get to know the person you talk to. Here is how to do it.
Daniel : Bonjour, je m’appelle Daniel! : Hello my name is Daniel
Laura : Salut, moi c’est Laura : Hi I am Laura
Daniel : J’ai 20 ans et je suis étudiant. Et toi ? : I am 20 year-old and I am a student. And you?
Laura : J’ai 21 ans, je suis aussi étudiante : I am 21 year-old and I am also a student
Vocabulary and explanation
Bonjour/salut : hello/hi
Bonjour can be used in any situation to talk to anyone (even your cat :p), however salut is suitable for non formal situations only.
Je m’appelle : I am called
“Je m’appelle” literally means “I am called”. It can be used both in a formal and non formal situation. On the contrary “Moi c’est Laura” “me it’s Laura”, which means “I am Laura”. is way less formal than “Je m’appelle” or “Je suis” and should be kept for non formal situations.
Note that French people frequently omit “je m’appelle” or “je suis” and only say their name after shaking hands (between men) or kissing on the cheek (for women).
J’ai/ Je suis : I have/I am
J’ai 20 ans literally means ” I have 20 years”. In French we always say our age with the verb “avoir” (to have).
Je suis étudiant(e). Here you can notice that Daniel wrote “étudiant” and Laura “étudiante”. “Etudiante” is simply the female version of “étudiant” (student). As a beginner, gender isn’t that important. Simply remember that adding a “e” often makes the word female. It doesn’t work everytime though, would be too simple :p.
“Je suis” is the conjugation of être (to be) at the first person of singular. That’s something you will see very often in French and that you should absolutely remember.
Aussi : also
“Aussi” is used after the verb to express the fact that you share something with the person.
Et toi ? And you?
Et toi is the casual way to say “and you?”, “what about you?”. To say it more politely, all you need to do is replace “toi” by “vous”. “Et vous?”
Now it’s your turn to introduce yourself !
Tell us about yourself in the comments, we will correct any mistake you may make, so don’t be shy .
